Underlying Concept (Accounting / Logic / Calculation)

Concepts

COGS (Cost of Goods Sold): The direct cost incurred to purchase or produce goods sold in a period. P&L using COGS = Revenue - COGS. It does not account for remaining unsold stock.

P&L Using Opening / Closing Stock: Alternate profit calculation method: Gross Profit = Sales - (Opening Stock + Purchases - Closing Stock). This accounts for change in inventory value over time and is commonly used in trading businesses.

Inventory Valuation: The monetary value assigned to unsold stock at a point in time. The value differs by method (Weighted Average or FIFO) and directly affects reported profit and balance sheet figures.
